I just pulled one of my credit reports from the ONLY site that is totally FREE. To get your free credit report directly from the three agencies you need to go annualcreditreport.com to log in.

Once you have filled in the necessary identifying information on the first page you will be able to request a credit report from

Experian

Equifax

Transunion.

You can request all three at the same time or you can do what I do, which is request one from each bureau every four months so that you spread out the reports over a full year.

I was only able to get one report this time because it is not time for the other two to be available to me. I am not worried because I have alerts on my accounts that tell me of new activity and I am aware of what is happening with my credit.

I just wanted the information as a general part of keeping up with my finances and I urge you to get your free credit report if you have not already done so.

It is usually a good thing in the personal finance world when you pull your credit report so why am I mad that I pulled mine this time? Well I was not thinking clearly when I went to annualcreditreport.com and pulled TWO reports on the same date.

I am now left with only one report that I can pull for the rest of the year and we still have TEN months left!!!! A friend of mine recently had his identity breached, with someone trying to open multiple accounts using his information. This had me spooked and pulled out my spreadsheet of credit report requests only to find out that I had not requested any official reports last year.

This meant that I could request all three any time this year so I began the process. Now the way I utilize my credit reports is to pull one from each of the three bureaus every four months. I spread out the reports because they generally have the same information so it makes more sense to spread out my requests over the entire year so that I can keep up to date with the changes that happen.

This time I was spooked by what happened to my friend and without thinking I printed off reports from Transunion AND Equifax on the same day.

This was not a very efficient use of the credit reports, especially since they both contained the same information and there was nothing that I needed to be worried about. I think part of what got me to be so complacent was that I also monitor my credit information on CreditKarma and Quizzle and those two places report from credit agencies.

My credit score is right about 763 (give or take a few points from each bureau) and there have been no inquiries lately so I was not worried about my credit history. This led me to be complacent and not order any reports last year but then I freaked out and ordered them all at once this year.

I need to go back to my regular schedule of ordering one report every four months but that unfortunately will not be put into place until 2012 rolls around. I need to go back to my Google calendar and schedule a credit report check and then not do it until that date actually comes around. In fact I will go ahead and schedule them right now.

How do you keep up with your credit information?

I did not actually misplace the card..it was closed due to inactivity. I received a letter in the mail telling me that one of the credit cards that I own was closed because I had not used it in a long time. It was not one of my older cards, nor was it a card with a high limit so I am not too upset at losing it. I had been thinking about reducing the number of cards that I have and just keeping the three oldest ones which also have the highest limits and best rewards.

That way I would have a Discover, a Visa and a Master card to my name. I am not concerned right now about the hit to my credit score because of the reduction in my available credit, but I do think about the fact that the reason listed for the closing is NOT “closed at consumer’s request.”

I think I need to just bite the bullet on the cards that I do not use and go ahead and close them now and have that statement added than to wait and have the cards closed by the company.

I have been using Credit Karma for a while now to track one free credit score. They recently introduced the Credit Report Card which gives you a grade on various aspects of things that make up your credit score.

If you are not already a member of Credit Karma I suggest that you go over there right now and sign up for an account. You enter a bit of information about yourself and authorize them to pull your credit report. This will be a ‘soft’ pull since it is was requested by you and will not adversely affect your credit report.

If you had gotten a ‘hard’ pull like from having a company check out your credit report for you to open a new account then that would have a negative effect on your credit report and would lower it a few points.

If you are already a member then you need to log in to your account and click where it says Credit Report Card, below where you normally click to get your updated credit score.

I got an A for Open Credit Card Utilization as my utilization (percent of credit used compared to total available credit) is at 19%.

While this is still a high figure among PF Bloggers (generally less than 10% is optimal) it is still showing my credit card companies that I am being responsible by not needing to use too much of my available credit.

It means that I am only using 19% of the total credit that I have available to me and therefore I might not be a big risk to t he credit card companies when it comes to my ability to repay what I have used.

I also got a good credit score weighting because I have a healthy credit score that is currently above 700. According to Credit Karma (which only reports one score) my credit score now sits at 755 and it has been steadily climbing since I started using the service to track my credit.

I then went on to check a few other grades and as you can see from the images below I got a varying report card.

I got an A for having on time payments all the time. I pride myself on paying my bills on time and by using ING to manage my payments I can almost ensure that no bill is late. If you refer to my Zero Based Budget you will note that most bills are paid via credit card and then I use ING to pay off the card in full every month.

Other bills that cannot be paid via credit card are paid through ING’s Electric Checking so that I can have paper checks mailed out or electronic payments sent if the bill allows it.

I got a D for the age of my credit lines because according to my files the average age of my credit cards is 3 years 8 months. I do have a card that is 9 years old but the other main card that I use is only about 2 years old so I am guessing that the averages are about right.

I got a C for total accounts because it says I have 27 accounts on file. This includes credit cards and the car loan but does not have a mortgage because I rent. It was interesting to note that the 27 accounts takes care of both open and closed accounts that have not dropped of my credit report as yet. At the time of posting I had 13 open accounts and 14 closed accounts which are set to start dropping off my credit report in December 2009.

I got a few more grades at different levels and the lower ones are just a guide on things that I need to work on in the future to improve my credit standing (cue Shawn who hates credit scores in 3, 2, 1) so that when I do get ready to apply for a mortgage I can get a better rate.

It is time to order your FREE credit report again from www.annualcreditreport.com. Since you can only order one free credit report every twelve months from one of the credit bureaus, it is best to space them out and order one every four months.

That way you will be better able to see changes in your credit file over the year instead of having to wait a whole twelve months for the next set of reports.

You can get your free credit report from

Transunion

Equifax

Experian

by going to www.annualcreditreport.com and filling out the information. Don’t be fooled by the cute guy on the television who tells you to go somewhere else for a ‘free’ report as that report is for a monthly paid service.

I ordered my report from Experian in January and tried to get one today but because I have a credit freeze on my account (due to my identity being compromised in the past) I have to fill out and mail in some additional papers to get my new report from the bureau.

Remember to get your free report and see what is going on with your accounts. On another note…my credit score went up to 749 woo-hoo!

Since many of us are very concerned with our credit reports I have been asked to review this credit repair site and produce this advertisement for them. I went over to Ovation Credit Services to see what they offered and how it could benefit me and my readers when it came to managing our credit.

The first thing I noticed is that the site is very well laid out with eye catching graphics. I like pretty looking icons since they draw my attention and this site is full of clean lines and interesting images. This makes it easy to navigate the site, which is very easy to use.

Ovation offers two packages for credit repair and credit monitoring which you can tailor to your personal needs. Now while the front page states that there is no up front fee you will notice when you go to sign up you need to enter your credit card information on the sign up page, so I am not sure what that is about. If you are not ready to sign up immediately they do offer the option of live chat with a representative OR you can call the number provided and speak to someone about your options that way.

The difference between Ovation and some other credit repair sites that I have noticed is that they have a good refund policy. If Ovation does not provide the services as outlined in your contract they will refund 100% of the fees for the month that is in question if they have already charged you for it. If the bill for the month has not been collected and you elect to discontinue being a customer, then Ovation will not charge you for that month.

You can get some great guidance with their team of lawyers and representatives and if you are not satisfied then you can get your money back so what are you waiting for? If you have been considering using a credit monitoring and repair service why not give Ovation a call and see what they can work out for you?

As of April 29th my credit scores were as follows:

Experian 739

Equifax 729

Transunion 748

These scores are all in the excellent range but they were not able to help me get a better rate on my car loan because I am currently upside down on the car loan.

I noticed that I am listed on some credit cards that do not ‘belong’ to me in the strictest sense of the word. Honey added me as an authorized user on two of his credit cards and they are both showing up on my credit report. While this is good because he is very responsible and it shows me as having more available credit, I wonder if it is hurting me as well.

I considered having Honey remove me from those two credit cards because I was worried that it might show up as me having too many open credit card lines. Having too many open credit cards shows up as a negative to some lenders because, according to the notes on the credit report, they see you as overextending yourself with credit cards.

Lenders see you as a risk because at any time you might just decide to max out all of those cards and not have enough money to pay them off.

I decided that I will just keep things as they are because these scores are good and I have been really careful. I am just hoping they go up some more so that I can use that as leverage to get Citi to lower the rate on my credit card.

I was speaking about ways to save money with a coworker who mentioned that she wanted to buy a house soon. She was worried about the rate she would get because she knew her credit score was bad .

This person, I’ll call her S, said she had a lot of unpaid medical bills and phone bills from her past. There were also a few bills that had been late in the past but then she had settled with the company so she hoped that had already dropped off her credit report.

S told me she was thinking of hiring a credit repair company to clean up her credit report because she had heard they could take items off. This is the point where I had to stop her and put on my Personal Finance hat. In the short time that I have been blogging about my personal finances I think I have learned a few things that I could share with someone.

Pull Your Credit Report

The first thing I told her was that she needed to save her money and not pay someone to do what she could do herself. I showed her how to go to www.annualcreditreport.com which is the ONLY site to give you your credit reports for free.

My advice to her was to pull one report right now and then pull the other two in four month increments, since you can only get one free credit report from each bureau each year.

S decided to get two of the reports on the same day and then she would get the other one in four months so she could see what changes had been made. She was really surprised to see that there were items that were still showing up on her credit report after three years. I told her that it took about seven years for items to drop off the credit report even when they have been paid in full and closed off .

I also told her that just because she called the company and asked for the account to be closed it could still be showing up on her credit report because some companies take a few months before reporting to the credit bureaus. They usually do this because they are hoping that you will reopen the accounts in most cases.

Pay Bills on Time

My friend was not paying all of her bills on time for whatever reason. I told her that one thing the companies looked at was whether or not you are paying on time. She sometimes paid more than the minimum on the accounts, especially if they were paid late, because she was trying to cover the late fees and interest.

I told her the first thing she needed to do was to determine the minimum needed for each monthly bill. If she could find enough money to cover the minimum payment on each bill then she could pay all the bills on time, instead of paying extra on some but paying them late. In my opinion, it would be much better for my friend to pay the minimum on all her bills and have them paid on time than to show sporadic payments and late payments on some accounts if she is trying to boost her credit score.

Pay More Than The Minimum

If you can pay more than the minimum then you are doing much better when it comes to raising your credit score. I did not go into detail with her about how much she could afford to pay each month but I told her to think about it. Paying above the minimum payment (on time!!!) will go towards her paying less in interest and fees so that she can take down the outstanding balances faster.

She said she had not thought about these things before and I told her that I had been in a similar mindset before I started blogging and reading other Personal Finance Blogs and really taking note of how I was managing my money.

These are just the first few things that we spoke about while at work. I will check up with her again to see how she is doing and to see if she wants any more of my help.

Do you speak to coworkers and friends about managing money? How does that go? Do you reveal that you blog too?

This is a follow up to Crazy Things that Kill Your Credit Score…Part 1 of 2 where I spoke about the first two items on the list.

Here are the two other strange items that can really ding your credit score in a bad way.

Using Limitless Cards

Library fines and other fees

Let us take a deeper look at these two items and how they can end up having a negative effect on your credit score.

Using Limitless Cards

Limitless cards are basically those cards that do not report what the actual credit limit is. These cards report what your highest balance is and the credit bureaus use this as their guide.

A situation like this can really hurt your credit score because it looks like you are using a higher percentage of your credit than you actually are. if you are using a card that does not accurately report your credit limit then you should contact the customer service department right away.

Get the card to report your credit limit and in a few weeks there should be an adjustment to your credit score.

Library fines and other fees

If you have library fines or parking tickets that are unpaid then you better be prepared for a lower credit score. These items are reported to the credit bureaus as a slap on the wrist for negligent people and the few points that they take off your score can really add up over time.

Pay the library fines quickly so the payments can be reported to the credit bureaus and then you can be on the path to getting a better score.

If you have parking tickets then try to get those cleared up as well. Do what it takes now because the credit bureaus do take a while to update your scores after all your payments post.

If you can take care of these small items then you do stand a better chance of not having your score drop as much as someone who overlooks these cases.

I found this story about a Widow who finds her Credit tied up in her husband’s name after he died. This is a very unfortunate circumstance for her but it just goes to teach us the importance of having your own, separate credit history when you get married.

I have already decided that when I get married my husband and I will keep separate accounts. This is not so that we can hide money from each other, but rather to protect against one of us losing access to credit history if something happens to the other one.

Joint Accounts are okay

We can have a joint account for things that we will be paying together like the mortgage and utilities. We will each contribute to that account and then the account will be used to pay those bills.

Having a joint accounts also helps couples to manage their money better because each partner can monitor the other one and offer advice if needed. When you have a joint account you have someone else who you need to think about when you are spending, so you might tend to be a little more careful about what you do.

Separate Accounts are okay too

Our credit cards will continue to remain separate because we have credit histories tied to those cards. We will also have separat, high yield checking accounts for the things that we splurge on or want to have as discretionary spending.

That makes it a lot easier to track certain things and I do not have to account for why I have been buying socks every month. (I really, REALLY like socks!)

I also have a way to keep things that should really be separate, like getting my hair done or buying things that my (future) husband has no interest in.

Like those pretty pink bath gels with sparkles.

I love getting bath gels and fizzies and poufs almost as much as I love socks. Those are my little indulgences and I do not know of many men who like these things.

I need to have my own little account where I can keep track of how much I spend on such frivolous things because I just know I can get out of control if I am not watched.

These may seem trivial to some people but you would be surprised at the number of households that have arguments over silly items that someone bought.

While I think that joint accounts are great I will continue to keep a few separate accounts just to make sure that if something happens my credit can stand on its own.

What do YOU think about having separate accounts when you get married? Leave a comment and let us know!

Do you know what hurts your credit score? We all read about the obvious ones like Closing off old Credit Cards and Opening New Lines of Credit.

Did you know that opening a new line of credit can affect your credit in a negative way for up to ONE YEAR after you open it?

According to an article on MSN Money here is a partial list of Weird Stuff that Hurts your Credit Score.

Opening New Lines of Credit

Making Balance Transfers

Using Limitless Cards

Library fines and other fees

Some of these things are really strange to me. It is not just the basic fact but the reasoning behind some of these things that can make you cringe when you think of what they do to your credit score.

I will talk here about the first two and then then follow up in Part 2 of this post with the other two items.

Opening New Lines of Credit

We all know that opening new lines of credit will affect your credit score. But why should this go on to negatively affect you up to one year later? I think that it is bad enough when you get the first ding and these items need to drop off the ‘dingable’ offenses list after about three months.

Making Balance Transfers

All the PF Bloggers talk about getting those fabulous 0% credit cards to take advantage of balance transfers. I have taken advantage of balance transfers myself from time to time so that I can get a better handle on my credit card debt.

What most people do not realize is that when you do the balance transfers you may be shifting the credit utilization ratio to an unfavorable percentage.

Say you had two cards as follows:

Card One: 23% rate, $2000 balance , $3500 limit

Card Two: 17% rate, $1000 balance, $2000 limit

Your utilization rate would be:

Card One: 57%

Card Two: 50%

Then you applied for a 0% balance transfer but got card Three as follows:

Card Three: 0% rate, $4000 limit.

You transfer Card One and Card Two over to Card three, giving you a utilization rate of 75%.

While the balance transfer made sense for you since you lowered your interest rate it does not make sense for your credit score. The scoring system sees that you are using 75% of one card and the other two are not being used. This sends up a red flag somewhere because they would rather see that $3000 balance spread out over the three cards than all on one card.

Strange but true!

Come back to read Part 2 of 2 where I talk about the next two items on the list.

I had only heard about life lock two days ago and thought about the people who use it. Then imagine my surprise when I got a letter in the mail from my insurance company that said I was at risk for identity theft!!!!!

I Am At Risk for Identity Theft

I was told that a laptop containing my sensitive information had been stolen from the company that handles one of my insurances through my job. I immediately thought about the number of times I read about things like this happening but never thought it could happen to me.

Action Taken

I immediately called up Transunion and asked them put an alert on my credit information. This means that any time a request for credit is made in my name the person or business has to call me to verify that I really want this done. They have my cell phone number because that is a secure line to me, instead of my work number. Transunion told me that they notify Experian and Equifax to let them know about the alerts so I did not need to contact them.

Life Lock can Help

Life Lock can provide this same service and more to you if you should experience a situation similar to this. For the small fee of $10 a month they firstly contact the three credit bureaus to let them know about your situation.

They repeat this every 90 days since the alerts are only kept for 90 days by the three bureaus. Life Lock also contacts credit companies and requests that your name be removed from all of those preapproved offers, making you a less likely target for further credit abuse.

They also offer assistance with finding the best legal representation should you come to the point where you should need it.

You may not think you need a service like this, and I certainly never thought this would happen to me but you never know what will happen.
