I received this book called The Essential Credit Repair Handbook and I thought it would be a good book to share with you all. The thing I like the most about the book is that it is very readable but it does not talk down to the reader. I got this book just as I was getting some questions from a reader about how to repair her credit and get out of debt so this will be a good review of some of the tips that I gave the reader.

One of the very first things mentioned in the book is to set goals and the writer, Deborah McNaughton, lists her essential ten steps towards goal setting. I disagree with having ten steps as I believe that many of those steps could have been combined and having fewer steps makes the task seem more manageable to someone who is already feeling overwhelmed with debt. The ten steps are a good jump off point for the rest of the book because they show that getting out of debt is NOT easy or quick and you have to follow certain steps to get to each point that you desire.

The book then goes on to address the issue of WHY you are in debt in the first place and challenges readers to take a look as far back as childhood to see what your financial influences were. Only after you identify your attitudes towards and confront the reason why you are in debt can you really begin to make progress towards eliminating that debt.

Chapter four is where we really get into the details of budgets and that was one of the best parts of the book for me. The author lists the things that I did and what I recommend to readers in order to build a budget:

Track your spending

Track your income

Create the actual budget

Tweak that budget

In order to have a realistic budget you will need to track your income and spending down to the last cent for a full month. It is time consuming but if you make it a daily habit then it gets easier as time goes on.

“But I don’t want to track every cent for a month!!!”

Well then you don’t really want to get out of debt do you? The only way to get an accurate picture of what comes in and what goes out is to track it. And by tracking I mean that you write it down! The author suggests using a notebook or using software like Quicken, but a simple Excel spreadsheet works fine and it will total the values for you…no need to use a calculator. I personally have my monthly spending in Google documents so that I can access them from anywhere and I don’t need to bother with a notebook. It is also recommended to use Mint.com to track your spending electronically but remember that does not take into account cash spending at

vending machines

laundry

parking meters etc.

After telling you how to create and manage your budget there are a few tips on how to effectively tweak your budget after the first 30 days so that you have a realistic representation of your actual budget. It might take a few iterations in order to get the budget the way you want it but do not give up.

The rest of the book goes on to talk about getting out of debt by increasing your income, reducing expenses and making calculated payments on your debt according to various snowball methods. In order to be totally honest the ONE point that I totally disagree with the author on is that she says the only way to get out of debt to is stop using your credit cards.

I may be the only person saying this but I think you can get out of debt while still using a credit card….because THAT IS THE WAY I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I stopped using the regular cards that had balances but I got ONE clean card that earned cash back and used that for daily living and used the budget money to pay off that card every week. This way goes against the ‘established’ methods of getting out of debt but it worked for me because I was able to use the cash back rewards to put towards the snowflake payments towards other debt. I kept that card at a zero balance by only purchasing what I had the money for. I paid that card EVERY week based on the total of the purchases I had made so that when the due date came along I never had a balance. It worked for me so I know it can be done….but the author chooses to follow the cash method because I guess it is easier for most people and does not take the intense effort that maintaining a clean card does.

The book ends with some information about handling identity theft, which is becoming more and more important for us today. In general, although there were a few minor things I disagreed with, this is a book that I would recommend to my readers!!!!

Tom Torbjornsen wrote the book How to Make Your Car Last Forever
in order to help car owners save money on their vehicles by keeping them in great shape. The book promises to offer tips that can help you keep your vehicle in top shape so that it can last longer than you ever thought possible.

I received this book to do a review and my first thought was that the name was a bit misleading. It probably should have been called How To Make Your Car Last Longer Than You Thought or something similar because we all know that sooner or later the car WILL give up and die no matter how well you take care of it.

I decided to go ahead and read the book to see what tips I could get from it and see if I could extend the life of my car by following simple tips. The book is arranged into three main sections:
-Vehicular Systems
-Rules To Follow To Make That Car Last Forever
-Straight Talk

Vehicular Systems talks about the interior workings of the car like the engine and the braking and cooling systems. This section of the book made you more aware of the various components of the inner workings of the car and I think it was good information for a budding mechanic, but it did overwhelm me.

Rules To Follow To Make That Car Last Forever talks about the things that you can do like checking your fluids and ways to summerize and winterize your car. This section detailed the importance of keeping your car clean both for resale value and for the longevity of your vehicle.

Straight Talk talks about warranties and the things you can do that will make sure your car gives out on you very early and probably in an embarrassing or dangerous situation. I was surprised to learn of some of the things that were not covered by warranties and I think that this is an excellent section of the book. I would have preferred to see this section closer to the front instead of all the more technical stuff that was in the earlier chapters.

I thought the book was a bit heavy on the technical stuff for a casual operator like me because there is no way I would be changing lights in my car. I can change wiper blades and that is about it when it comes to poking around in the car. It is a very good book for those do it yourself types who would really want to do those things so I guess the book caters to all levels of experience.

For people like me we can just pick the parts that we want to do and take the vehicle in for the rest, while the budding mechanics can get into the more detailed operations. One thing that I really liked about the book was that it offered large, colorful images of the parts of the car so you could see what they are supposed to look like if they are clean and well functioning.

The images were interspersed with short batches of questions from drivers that were then answered by the author, Tom Torbjornsen, in easy to read language. There was also a do it yourself section that gave detailed tips on how to do things like:
-change your wiper blades
-replace a turn signal bulb and
-change a tire

In general I think this is a well written book that covers vehicles for both casual users like me and the more experienced car enthusiasts out there so if you don’t have a copy you will find it well worth it to get one.

(Please note that you can BUY the book:How to Make Your Car Last Forever

There has been A LOT of talk about Intuit taking over Mint and people are worried about whether there will be a hybrid of the two. Mintken? QuicMint?

In this release from Mint.com Scott Cook, the founder of Quicken, says that Intuit is Not Going To Change Mint. So we can all rest assured that we will still have Mint.com and QuickenOnline as two separate entities.

I use both sites to track my finances so if there is a merge I do not think I will be bothered. How do YOU feel about the merger between Mint and Quicken? Will you change your usage habits or not?

I was recently given the opportunity to test and review a printer from Brother. It is the Brother 790cw model and is a

printer

scanner

copier and

fax machine

all in one machine. The printer was shipped to me and the first thing I noticed was that it was a lot heavier than I expected. I guess it has to be heavy since it has all of those components all rolled into one machine.

What I Liked:

Copier works without software installation.

Ink was easy to install.

What I Did Not Like:

Came without printer cable.

Cover part is not easy to close but construction feels flimsy.

Photograph paper difficult to use.

General impressions

The machine came in a basically ready to use state. The only parts that needed assembling were the phone line which consisted of plugging in the handset provided. I was not able to use the fax option since I do not have a home telephone line.

The machine can scan and copy without the software being installed so this was a real blessing for me. I was able to copy a document in color and all of the colors (except one neon green) came out looking like the original.

I ran into problems trying to use the glossy photograph paper to copy a photograph. The directions for using photograph paper are not very clear in the user guide and I spent about five minutes trying to pull a part towards me when the directions really meant for you to push it away from you.

You need to feed the photograph paper into a tray that you pull out above the regular paper tray and for some reason the machine was not able to grab the paper correctly. It either decided to print a tiny strip of the image on the glossy paper and the rest of the image on regular paper or it would simply ignore the glossy paper.

The machine comes with a touch screen that is very intuitive and I was able to play with the settings and adjust them to what I wanted very easily.

I regret that I was not able to set up the printer options because that required being connected to the network and I do not have a telephone line. The printer can also use a USB cable to connect but I did not have a USB cable with a connection that fit the size required and the machine did not come with that cable. I was reluctant to go out to purchase a cable just for that purpose so I did not install the printer options.

I think the machine is a good one for someone who needs all of the various features of printer/scanner/fax and I was pleased with the options I was able to access, except the ‘print a photograph’ option.

Interest rates are falling everywhere on savings and checking accounts and the economy is in a bad shape right now. One of the best things you can do to save money now is to put your money in a Money Market account, since these generally have higher savings rates than regular savings accounts.

The money market account might also have the advantage over a Certificate of Deposit in that you have faster access to your money. With this in mind one place you can put some money if you chose to is with an account at M&T Online Banking. M&T currently offers a money market rate of 0.75% APY, which may not seem like much right now…but when you think of some accounts that are currently paying 0.42% you can see the difference in the interest that you will end up getting.

It is very easy to set up an account with M&T and they are FDIC insured so you do not need to worry about your money being safe or not. You first need to choose your zip code area so the company can better tailor their offerings to your area. Steps to setting up a new account are as follows:

Choose your account type

Enter personal information

Review terms and conditions

Set up card

Fund your account

Get confirmation

These money market accounts do not require a minimum balance so that makes it easy for regular people like you and me to set them up. Some additional features that come with this money market account are:

Round the clock access

Over 1600 ATMs for easy access to your money

No monthly fees

If you are looking for a way to save some money now please look into Money Market accounts as an alternative to traditional savings accounts.

Christmas is just around the corner and with it comes shopping for gifts for everyone. If you buy gifts online, like at Amazon.com you can save a lot of money over buying them in a traditional store.

It can get a bit overwhelming sometimes to sort through the mounds of stuff that is available so in steps the Amazon Discounts Finder. The site could not be easier to use and it can help you save time as well. All you have to do is enter a keyword, pick the category and then click the discount range you would like. I did a search for ‘Apple’ in the electronics category and put in a range from 90% to 99% discount.

The site returned 286 results which was a lot less than the over 5000 results from searching for 10% to 99%. Now while you might think of this as being cheap it really is not. You are simply looking to see if an item that you would like is offered at a bigger discount on Amazon…and this stretches your Christmas dollar further.

The Amazon Discounts Finder is simple and bare bones and it allows you to quickly find what you need.

It is Halloween time again and my coworkers were asking me what kinds of halloween costumes I had in mind for tomorrow. Apparently we were supposed to dress up (and WHERE is the memo?) for Halloween so that our students can have something to look forward to.

Um really?

I have never ‘dressed up’ for Halloween before. The closest I came to was putting on a Santa Claus hat and wearing a red sweatsuit for a party. I was ‘sexy Santa’. I had no idea we were supposed to be wearing costumes and it really is too late now for me to go scrounge anything up that would make sense.

If I had known about it before I might have gotten into the spirit and looked for something like a vampire or living dead because I tell my students that when they misbehave they drain the life out of me. As it is right now, I would really need to rely on some type of website to give me some ideas that I could possibly work with so that I could get something that is appropriate for work.

I guess I will have to stick with the trick or treaters instead since I am way too late to get anything that looks remotely interesting and they probably would not have anything usable in this small town anyway.

How can you become a better blogger with Dragon Naturally Speaking? Well, if you are like me then you speak faster than you type…and that is how you become better.

Sometimes I want to write a post but at the end of the day I am so tired that I just don’t want to type anymore. I think that if I had a product like Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard then I could just talk out loud and have all the typing done for me. Then I could save my poor tired wrists for simple editing like inserting pictures and formatting other areas like fonts.

In fact a NY Times Review of Dragon NaturallySpeaking found that the software is so advanced that it can now identify different accents in order to help the user make better use of the software. According to the video shown, the Dragon Software even allows the user to cut down on the number of commands needed to italicize or bold text. In the past, the software required three separate steps to highlight and perform the action on the selected text, but currently it only requires one command.

I would really like to have this kind of software so that I can be one of the bloggers who are proud to say Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Preferred here. I tried a talk and type program a few years ago but it had so many problems with converting my speech that I just gave up on it.

I think that the advances in the last ten years will make this new software very exciting for bloggers and I cannot wait to try it out.

Have YOU used any software like this before? What was your experience like?

I recently looked at my credit score and saw that it had gone up due to a few factors. These were mainly items like me not adding to my debt load and paying my bills on time all the time. I know there are a lot of people out there who have a bad credit score and they are always searching for ways to Fix Bad Credit Score so that they can have a better life.

If you have bad credit there are really some steps you need to take to make sure that you get back on track. Here are some of the things to keep in mind when you are trying to restore your good credit rating.

* Know Your Score

* Pay Those Bills

* Check Credit Limits

* Keep Old Cards

* Change Spending Habits

The first step is to know your score. You can order your credit report from the bureaus yourself so that you know where you are and what you need to get to. The second part is to keep paying your bills. Even if you can only pay the minimum that is better than not paying at all.

You also need to keep an eye on the credit limits you have so that you do not go over. If you are too close to the limit on your cards, this sends up a red flag and also lowers your score.

The older your credit history, the better, so keep those old cards open.

You can’t get out of debt if you don’t change your mindset. Make a deal with yourself not to add to the debt burden and you will be on the path to recovery.

It is time for me to take someone to the airport this weekend and I was thinking about where I can get the best Airlines Cards so that I could maximize airline miles.

The person who is taking the trip is not a member of any airline miles rewards club, even though she makes about two trips per year. I like to use credit cards to get rewards so I think the best thing for me to do would be to use a credit card that also gave miles as rewards. That way you can use the miles to earn discounts and even free trips!

I looked about the internet to find a site that had the best laid out information and found that this site has information like the best card to use with Delta (which is actually the flight I am interested in). It lists the best card to use with each airline, making it much easier to use than the cards that only list the card first and then you have to try to see if they work with your particular airline.

You can also find information such as the rates and if there are any sign up bonuses available in the form of extra miles. I think this is a great site for frequent fliers to check out so that they can make the most of their air time.

What sites do YOU use to maximize your airline miles?

It is time to go back to school tomorrow and I am so happy that I have Color labels for all the folders I need to keep track of all the time. I am currently working at an alternative school and I deal with students from elementary school to High school.

I decided to color code my student’s general files so that I can easily tell what level a student falls into. So my color coding system is as follows:

High school boys are Green

I have to share office space with two other teachers and since I am very particular about my things I have everything labeled. I am in Special Education..which means that I have TONS of folders for IEPs and BIPs and a host of other paperwork. I have serious issues with people using my pens etc. and since I bought all of my things personally I have decided to keep them labeled.

This way if someone does decide to borrow something of mine I have a way to identify what goes where. I also want them to be able to return my items to their proper place so that I do not have to spend precious time searching for something that I need.

I remember going to school when I was little and having my desk so carefully organized that I did not even need to look in it to find something. I could locate my items by touch unless someone had gone in there and moved my things around. I made a folder for homework for each subject and wrote the subject on the edge of the folder so I could easily tell what I had in my bag. Since I do not have the best handwriting I think it would have been a lot easier for me if I could have had some labels to work with…but such is life.

I used the Dymo label maker when I worked in retail and it was a TREMENDOUS help to me. I love the ease of use and the various styles of lettering that they come with. It also makes my work look more professional than my handwriting does so I definitely think it has made my life easier. Plus it is available at WalMart and you know how much I love shopping there so it is very convenient for me.

Do YOU use printable labels in your line of work?

I am thinking of moving to a new host and wanted to find a web host rating site that could help me to make a good decision. I finally found such a site and although I will be leaving the final decision to my support person I wanted to see what other people were saying about some of the top web hosting providers.

I found that the site was easy to navigate and there were links to the various companies available from the main site. There are also a few recent reviews from customers, which give details of their experiences with the companies. The experiences are good and bad so I think there is not such an element of bias in the reviews.

I will definitely take a closer look at all the user reviews here in order to be more knowledgable when I do get suggestions for my new host.

Do YOU have a favorite host that you would recommend to me?

Welcome to How I Save Money.

Have you heard about the Charter Laptop-a-Day Giveaway yet? Well unless you have not been reading your blogs then you must have heard about this great opportunity that is being held by Charter.

Charter Communications is a company that offers services like Cable and Internet to homes. I used Charter a few years ago when I lived with my last roommate….but unfortunately it is not available in my area where I currently live.

I can say that I had a good experience with the company so it is definitely one that I would recommend!!! Anyway back to the contest. You can get an entry to win a laptop from Charter when you order one of their services online. To make the deal even sweeter Charter will send customers a Shell Gift card just for signing up.

Now what could be better than that for back to school? A free gas card and a chance to win a laptop computer?

If you want a chance to win a new laptop all you have to do is enter the contest. You can start by getting high speed internet for about $20.00 a month which is REALLY affordable. My experience with Charter was that their high speed internet really was high speed, unlike some places that claim to be high speed but you really do not get the speed advertised.

I also had a great experience with the cable and the customer service was great. The technician who came out to my apartment was very courteous and did not try to upsell me on any services.

If I was not geographically restricted I would definitely take advantage of this great deal from Charter because as a blogger I do need the high speed internet, so why not get a gas card AND a chance to win a laptop out of that as well.

For those of you who live in the UK who have been asking me about sites for financial information I have some new information for you. This site is a great place to go to not only for information on Credit Cards in the UK but also on other financial areas.

The site is very well laid out so you can easily find the tips and information you need on everything from Insurance, to Loans to Mortgages and how to deal with them. One of the most exciting aspects of this site is that you can subscribe to their feed and get the most up to date information on any financial topic available on the site. Now I have friends who live in the UK who are very interested in this type of information because they are young like me and do not have anyone to steer them through.

If you do not want to bother with the RSS updates then you can opt to get the newsletter which is full of money saving tips and financial information. You can go through a number of the pages like the Utility page, which gives you information to compare different utility companies right on the site and then make your decision. As if the comparison was not enough, there is also up to date information on the latest happenings with utility companies in the news to help you make a better decsion.

I am very interested in credit cards due to my own experiences with them so I decided to check out the Credit Cards page to see what they offered. Not only can you compare credit cards based on various criteria, but the Credit Card page also offers you some of the latest credit card news and even offers a link that you can use to get your credit report for free. And we all know how much I love FREE stuff so how can you go wrong with that?

You can also look up and compare different insurance companies and to sweeten the deal they are offering a chance to win free insurance. In this promotion you can have the chance to have a refund on your insurance premiums for one year if you choose one of the companies through the site. I wish I had a chance at something like that with my insurance being what it is sometimes.

One final thing I noticed about the site that also makes it easy to use is that you can set up a personal profile so that you can access all of your information on the site. You can shop for insurance for your car and then shop for a credit card to pay the premiums and THEN get a bank to handle all of that information from one site. This makes it a lot easier to track everything that you are applying for and takes up a little less time in your day while you are getting your finances settled.

I have been thinking about my life a bit more deeply these days since I am not working right now. Many of the positions that I have seen are now requiring some sort of extra certification that I do not have. I have a business degree with a focus on Information Systems but no experience in my field.

I have experience in other fields like retail, banking and of course education but zilch when it comes to formal IT experience. This has been a big barrier to me lately and I am wondering if I should go ahead and try to scrape together the money to get my Cisco certification so I can get a leg up on the competition.

Since it has become more widespread for people to go into some sort of technical field it is becoming even more competitive for those of us who have business and IT related degrees. This means that in order to stay up to par with everyone else I would need to get some kind of certification so that I can use that on my resume in lieu of all the experience that I don’t have because no one will hire me.

There is a list of different certifications that you can get and they are all at varying levels of expertise in the area that you want to study. The first step that I would have to to take is to get the CCNA which is the basic requirements for the Cisco certification program. From there I could move on to higher levels of the program and end up with Expert certification in an area such as network security.

I am not ready to take that plunge yet but it is certainly something to look at for now so when the time is right I will be well prepared to make the best decision for my future.

I was recently in a really big financial mess. I had credti cards bursting at the seams with no visible way of paying them off. I was making the minimum payment on everything because that was all I could afford in order to not have any of the payments come up as late. Every month the balances were increasing because I was racking up interest on the cards and then I was adding more and more purchases to the cards as well.

I took up selling plasma to be able to cover the bills because I did not really have any other way that I could bring in more money.

I considered a number of things like Debt consolidation so that I could find a way to get rid of my debt but it all seemed hopeless.

I started to read personal finance blogs and when I heard about a few Debt relief programs I thought those might be a solution for me but I was not sure how to go about getting starte with them. I knew that I had to get Debt help and I needed to get it fast.

The first thing I needed to do was to check up on my financial IQ and see what I knew about my finances. I had to seriously think about my plan for my money so that I could work on a budget. Then with my budget in hand I could develop a plan for tackling the mess I was in financially.

When I had all the information down I wrote down all what I spent and tracked my money and then looked for areas I could cut down on the spending. The tips on this site are very helpful so you should check them out.

I have been reading a lot about alternative medicines and I was looking at some things that talked about using a natural colon cleanser to maintain your weight and health. Now I have heard of enemas and using laxatives to cleanse but I wanted a little more information on something that was more natural.

I remember reading up on the lemon cleanse but I thought that was a bit too extreme for me so I might need something a little easier to manage. I am interested in this because I saw on Oprah about things that stay in your colon and make you sick and when I was little my mother would have us get a purge every summer.

Apparently this Dual Action Colon Cleanse is made of all natural ingredients like fennel and lemon (which I mentioned earlier) which help to promote a healthy colon. When your colon is clean it helps the body to rid itself of toxins even better, which leads to a healthier you.

Healthier people go to the doctor less and therefore this would help me to save money in the end, even after the initial investment in the product.

I was looking at where I started with all my debt and how far I have come. I wish that when I had decided to work on my debt I had taken a closer look at debt consolidation services.

While these may not work for everyone they certainly do give you some options that may not otherwise be available at the time you need them. I considered getting a loan from a bank that I dealt with on a regular basis but was denied. I did not have friends and family that I could borrow from, so using a service like this would have been one of my last resorts.

I was afraid of trying out for a debt consolidation service because I knew that they would pull my credit report and this would lower my credit score and make it harder for me to get that score up. I also thought that you had to have some major assets like a house in order to be able to qualify. With this new service you do not need to have a home in order to be considered for consolidation. Since there is no hard credit check there is no risk to your credit score being negatively impacted by using the service and they offer free financial planning that will allow you to negotiate lower monthly payments.
