There are always office politics and people like that who are nosy and seem to want to be the bearer of all news. That’s just the way it goes. You already received extra money on the event anyways, so it’s not like you missed out on the opportunity. Any reasonable chance at some extra pocket money should be taken up on. If nothing else, it’ll help you buy some lunch.
