How to keep your Skin Clear

Posted by LuLuGal | September 25, 2007 .

I was at Wally World today and the cashier kept looking up at me while she was scanning my items. This lead me to think that I might have something on my face.

Well it turns out I did.

I had clear skin!

The cashier kept telling me she was sorry she kept staring at me but she was just amazed by my skin. She said it was very clear and she had never seen an adult with such clear skin. She also wished her skin looked like mine.

I just started to blush and stammered out a “Thank you” and let her finish up with my groceries.

If you ever thought about getting different types of skin treatment like wrinkle treatment< or other kinds of treatments like acne treatment, there are many places you can go to get this type of treatment done. Many people these days get laser hair removal and other different skin treatments for themselves.

This got me thinking about the number of people who compliment me on my skin and are always asking me what I do to keep it so clear. The first thing I must say is that I have good skin genes. My mother has clear skin and so does my father. I guess I was just lucky that way.

The second thing is that I drink a lot of water. No make that A LOT of water. I bought a water filter like this one in the refrigerator and I drink water all day long while I am at home. I usually have water with my meals instead of juice or soda just because it is healthier. If I do end up having juice or soda when I eat I will still drink a glass of water afterwards.

I keep a bottle of water by my bedside and drink it all during the night. I guess that also explains why I have to get up to go to the bathroom so often at night…..but that is another story. I bring bottled water to work with me and sip on it all during the day.
One thing I do is that I use Oil of Olay moisturizer on my face EVERY day. I put it on in the morning just before I leave for the day so it has a chance to work on my face as soon as I step out of the door. It has SPF 15 so that is an additional benefit. I started using Oil Of Olay moisturizer when I was very young because I saw my mother using it. Now I am in my twenties and all my friends ask why I use that because they think it is for older women. I just like the smell and feel of it and it is the one thing with SPF that does not make me break out. Then some other people tell me that I do not need the SPF because of my skin color. Oh boy! That one makes me laugh. Everyone needs SPF!!!!!

In order to keep my skin nice and clear I take vitamins. Well that is not the REAL reason I take vitamins. I take vitamins because I have always taken vitamins. My mother is a nurse and always had my brother and me taking vitamins and nutritional supplements. Now I have gotten to the point where I do not feel right if I do not take a Centrum. I buy the big bottle so that I always have it on hand. If I am going to spend the night away from home I try to carry one in a tissue (or take the whole bottle if possible) so that I can have my vitamins. I get a lot of jokes from my friends about this…..but hey it is my health.

I use the Clean and Clear line of products to clean my face. I have sensitive skin so I use only the ones that say for sensitive skin. I use the face wash about three times a week to deep clean my face. The rest of the time I just wash my face with plain water. Yes that’s right, just plain water.

Then I use the astringent on my face to get the last traces of whatever was left behind. I just swipe once over my whole face and I am done.

I really love the moisturizer here because it honestly works so well. I will put it on at night if I see a pimple and when I get up the next morning the pimple is gone! This also leaves my entire face feeling really soft and smooth when I rinse it off. I use the Clean and Clear products at night only, just before I go to bed.

I also use Biore nose strips because I get those little whiteheads on my nose. I use these maybe twice a week to clear out my pores so that I do not end up with blackheads on my nose. These little strips are such a blessing!!!!!

The last thing I do to keep my skin clear is I do not wear makeup. I firmly believe that makeup clogs up your pores and just makes your skin bad. I wear lip gloss and that is it. One of the benefits of wearing lip gloss and lipstick is that your lips get protection from the sun so it will benefit me in the long run when I am much older. I also do not touch my face unless it is necessary. That means I touch my face to wash it etc. but I do not just keep playing with my face because you know how many germs live on your hands.

So there you have it folks. This is what I do to keep my skin clear and blemish free.

I drink a lot of water

I use Clean and Clear

I use Oil of Olay

I use Biore nose strips

I take vitamins

I do not wear makeup

What do YOU do to keep your skin healthy and looking nice?

I take Omega Oils, wash it with olive oil soap and a fine facial brush every morning, and pat it with apple cider vinegar fresh out of the shower.

And I don’t use foundation :) Clear skin!

    @ Havi:
I use Clean and Clear stuff for my skin. The one thing I found with the people I know who use Proactive is that once they stop using it for more than two days their skin went back to being bad. Ouch!

    Wow @ no makeup.

I’ve tried, but I just can’t do it. I’m Italian, and have the token dark circles under my eyes. Combined with olive skin, the no-makeup effect is pretty hideous.

I have decided to try getting into mineral makeup though. Right now I only use creme (not liquid) foundation to cover the circles and the occasional pimple/scar.

One of my all time favorite products is St. Ives peach scrub. Of course, I buy the medicated one, but oh my does it make my skin soft! I know, it’s not good to scrub too much, but when my skin gets that “thick” feeling, I use a little of this stuff in the shower and I’m good to go.

Why can’t they come up with something that really works on the under eye area though? I’m 31 and starting to see wrinkles there too… sucks getting old!

I like the St. Ive’s apricot scrub too. I used it a few times and it feels very good.

Great advice BUT not good for oily . Everyone is different people break out due to hormones or stress. Sometimes from the dirt on your hand that makes contact with your face. I use Vegan make up NO foundation…..ever!

  9. Veronica says:

It is totally untrue that foundation makes your skin look bad. I cant believe people still think that its true in 2008!! Im in my mid 20s and I have very clear skin, and ive been wearing foundation for years (just on nose, chin and forehead) because it evens out my skin tone and makes my skin flawless. Nowadays there are AMAZING foundations that look SO natural (people are always suprised when i tell them i wear foundation) and i NEVER broke out because of it. I have many friends that also wear foundation everyday and they have super clear skin!! In fact foundation protects your skin from wind, pollution, etc. As long as you clean your face well everynight night, go ahead and wear foundation and blush and watever makes u happy ;-) Its just too bad that people still think MAKEUP = BAD SKIN. Oh well. Oh and my skin is very sensitive too, all I use is CETAPHIL GENTLE SKIN CLEANSER an the Cetaphil moisturizer. Amazing products.
But i agreee with you, water really helps too ;-)
    Take care!

i have tried all that and none of it sees to work, it may be my makeup. But i buy high top fashion makeup, nothign cheap. and i must say right now the best thign is proactive.

I would say the water is a must even if you dont notice your skin getting clearer…you probably just need different products on your skin but the water will top it off to give your skin that extra umph it needs to stay clear. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend retin-A topical treatment because I used to have the worst acne. I tried everything for years differing, proactive, clean and clear oil control, neutrogena line, phisoderm, nothing worked for me. it’s a really strong cream and it generally comes in a micro pump. I think it’s called retin-a micro pump. Ask your dermatologist for a bottle. Use a facewash with salicylic acid in it and/or benzoyl peroxide along with it to help keep it clear…i use neutrogena skin clearing makeup along with neutrogena redness soothing cream cleanser and retin-a micro pump and it really does wonders on my skin. the only con is that the retin-a takes about 3 to 5 months to actually work. you literally wont see any real result until the middle of the 2nd or 3rd month but i promise you it is totally worth it! i got mine in october and it didnt work until january but my skin is clearer than it’s ever been in my life. a bonus is that the retin-a also helps get rid of scarring over time and it generally doesnt make your face oily after you apply it. i use it on my chest and back too and i have no pimples! good luck! i hope this helps!

Sorry that none of my tips work for you. It is good that the Proactive works for you….the one thing I saw with people who use it was that when they stopped their face got worse.

I agree that all people will have different comments for this simply because everyones skin is different. I think keeping your hands off your face, and drinking lots of water is the best tip. And for those that can’t find a way to keep there face clean, keep trying different products and you’ll find it.
Mostiurizer is a boost too because your face gets dry quick.

    Thanks For The Tips

Hi, there. Found your blog toolin’ ’round the net on lunch. Here’s my favorite scrub: I mix a little bit of water with baking soda and scrub. Seriously, it’s awesome. I’ve stopped buying expensive scrubs and stuff like that. In the morning, I don’t wash my face but I do use the scrub most days and so far, so good.

  19. Henrietta says:

I use plain soap like ivory. First I would splash my face with warm water as warm as I can take it. I would make a lather of ivory soap in my hands and massage into my skin. I would wait until the soap gets dry and tight. Then I would take a facial clothe wet it with warm water and add soap apply it to my soap dried face in circles. Rinse with hot water and then with cold. Drink plenty of water for this is so true for clear skin.

The key to leave your skin clean and beautiful is the proper cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. The use of a good face scrub once a week also is very good.

Great list, with one exception. I have never found Biore pore strips to work. Maybe it is just my skin type, but for me they’re just a waste of money. Too bad, because some of my friends swear by them for removing small blackheads and whiteheads on the nose.

  30. I would add: “Don’t eat greasy pizza and other greasers”. That, a big of oil-free soap, a little bit of effort, and you’re in business.

  31. You are probably seeing a lot of new vitamin C beauty products hit the shelves of drug stores and department stores. Unfortunately, vitamin C oxidizes very rapidly in these products and you may not be getting the benefit of the vitamin C by purchasing these rather expensive creams and serums.

I get have really clear skin too!! I just wash my face with the Pink Grapefruit wash (Neutrogena) and use OLAY misturizer day and night. I don’t drink pop, i gave it up years ago and it really helps with keeping you skin clear. I drink water with every meal, have a glass of water at my bedside, and always have a full water bottle with me. I also eat A LOT of veggies and fruits, and don’t eat fast food because of all the grease and fat. I don’t wear much make up either cuz I feel like it just cause more acne when it clogs your pores… so i just wear mascara and the occasional eyeliner. Last, I was my sheets and blankets EVERY WEEK, esp. my pillow cases!! You don’t want all that dirt and stuff cloging up your pores!! oh ya.. i don’t touch my face cuz of all the icky germs!! lol..

    Nice article and helpful tips!
Besides the things you’ve mentioned I’d like to put the facial mask. I prefer those that are natural ingredients based. Once a month it makes your skin rejoice!
As for the neck line, the shoulders and the hips I use a peeling that I really love: put 1 spoonful each ground coffee and salt and 5 spoonfuls of olive oil. Mix them together and gently scrub your skin. Rinse well after 5 minutes.
Like you, I am among the lucky ones with good skin genes, so you can’t read age on my face.

  36. Thanks for the tips. I have just recently started putting on spf daily and it really has helped my skin.
