Update on the New Checking Account
I recently opened a new checking account because there is no Wells Fargo in the area where I live. I wanted the account so that I could handle daily transactions and be able to deposit any of the new checks that would be written to me.
The bank promised a Totally free checking account and I was very excited. I looked over the terms and could not find any usage fees anywhere so I ran over to the bank and opened the account. Then I spoke to them about the checks. I did not want any checks from the bank because they would normally charge you for ordering checks. The teller told me that I could put a deny request on the checks and they would not order me any.
Then after I opened the account the teller asked me if I wanted the ATM card. I questioned why I would be asked if I wanted the cards. She then told me that everything on the account was free…………………..EXCEPT the ATM.
Argggggh!!!!
It would cost me $12 a year to get the ATM card. Now I was mad but hey it was my fault for assuming that the debit card came with the account….like at other normal banks. While $12 is a nominal amount it is $12 that I can certainly save. I was NOT about to spend $12 just for the convenience of having a debit card for this account.
Since the bank is in WallyWorld and I am in there all the time I figure I can manage without the debit card. The bank closes at 6pm so I have enough time when I get off my internship during the week.
That way I can get the cash I need, which is very little. All I need is quarters for laundry and I can get that by using a withdrawal slip and getting the roll of quarters from the teller.
It is going to cost $25 if I close the account before six months so I am stuck with it for a little while longer. As soon as the six months are up I think I will close that account.
I think I will open a Chase account….but I am waiting on one of those bonus letters to come in so that I can get some money for opening the new account.
Do you think I should close the other account or leave it open?
