Debt help: 5 ‘Money management’ Top Tips (Guest Post)
Money management isn’t always easy. Even if your income is high enough (on paper) to cover your monthly costs, you might still find you’re running short towards the end of the month.
However, there are a few things you can do to improve your money management skills. A few ideas…
Create a budget
It’s hard to manage something if you don’t really understand how it works. So it stands to reason that keeping track of your income and expenditure is a key part of money management. Once you’ve added up where the money comes from and where it goes, you’ll be able to see how much ‘spare’ money you really have in a month, and where you might be able to make a few cutbacks.
Pay with cash / debit cards
There’s nothing wrong with using credit cards – as long as you keep track of your spending and you’re sure you’ll be able to clear the debt before interest becomes a problem.
But paying with cash means you’ll know exactly how much you have left. And of course, a debit card can give you the convenience of ‘paying with plastic’ without the risk of spending money you don’t have!
Be careful how you borrow
If you find you need to borrow money, be very careful about how you do it. Depending on your credit rating and financial situation, you may be able to access various different kinds of credit, from credit cards and store cards to overdrafts and personal loans.
Be aware that they all come with their own ‘pros and cons’, and the credit that’s right for one person might not be right for another. It’s well worth getting some free debt help from a professional debt adviser before you make any firm decisions.
Stay on top of your bills
Start missing payments and you could end up with charges, damage to your credit rating – even legal issues to deal with. A lot of people find that setting up direct debits makes it a lot easier to make sure they make every payment on time.
If you need debt help, get it
If you think you need debt help, don’t put it off. Most debt problems tend to get worse if they’re not addressed on time, but professional debt management help could make all the difference, whether it’s a debt solution or just some debt advice.

Since I’ve started to keep an accounting of where my money goes I have actually started to save more. I was amazed at how much I was blowing on things I really didn’t need.
Another important aspect of money management is to decide on your goals.
Once you have created your budget, track how you are progressing against your goals.
Sound advice. Budgets are boring really, but they are so necessary.
